Zovirax is an antiviral drug.
Release form and composition
Zovirax is available in the form of tablets, a lyophilisate for the preparation of injections, a cream and an eye ointment.
Zovirax tablets are round, white, placed on 5 pcs. in cell blister packs. They are sold in cardboard packs, in each of which 5 packs are placed.
Zovirax cream is produced in aluminum tubes of 2 g, 5 g and 10 g, which are placed in packs of cardboard. The cream is also sold in plastic bottles (2 g) with a dosing device.
Zovirax Eye Ointment is available in tubes with a polyethylene cap (4.5 g) placed in a carton box.
The lyophilisate for preparing the solution for infusion has the appearance of a white powder or a sintered mass. It is sold in glass vials, which are 5 pcs. Each. placed in plastic trays and placed in a stack of cardboard.
The active substance of drugs Zovirax - acyclovir.
Zovirax tablets contain 200 mg of acyclovir and excipients: sodium starch glycolate, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, povidone K30, microcrystalline cellulose.
The cream of 5% Zovirax contains 50 mg of acyclovir and excipients: soft white paraffin, propylene glycol, cetostearyl alcohol, poloxamer 407, liquid paraffin, dimethicone, sodium lauryl sulfate, macrogol stearate, glycerol monostearate, purified water.
The components of Zovirax eye ointment are 30 mg of acyclovir and white petrolatum.
The lyophilisate for preparing the solution for infusion contains 250 mg of acyclovir and sodium hydroxide.
Indications for use
Zovirax is used in the treatment of the following diseases:
- Infections of the skin and mucous tissues that are caused by herpes type I and type II viruses, including for the treatment of primary genital herpes and its exacerbations;
- Infections caused by varicella-zoster and herpes zoster viruses;
- Herpes type I and II in newborns;
- Prevention of infections that are caused by the herpes simplex virus in immunocompromised patients;
- Prevention of cytomegalovirus infection with bone marrow transplantation.
Zovirax eye ointment is prescribed in the treatment of keratitis of viral etiology, including that caused by the herpes simplex virus.
Contraindications to the reception of Zovirax is increased individual sensitivity to its components.
With caution, this drug is prescribed to patients suffering from such diseases:
- Impaired renal function;
- Neurological disorders.
Dosing and Administration
Zovirax tablets are taken regardless of the meal time, squeezed with plenty of clean non-carbonated water.
In the treatment of infections that are caused by the herpes simplex virus, tablets of 200 mg are prescribed 5 times a day, that is, every 4 hours, excluding the time of a night's sleep. The usual course of therapy is 5 days. In case of intestinal absorption disorders or pronounced immunodeficiency, the dosage of the drug is doubled.
To prevent the recurrence of infections caused by the herpes simplex virus, patients with normal immune status take 200 mg of Zovirax every 6 hours. Sometimes it is prescribed the drug 400 mg every 12 hours. The course of treatment Zovirax periodically stops for 6-12 months.
In order to prevent infections caused by the herpes simplex virus, Zovirax is prescribed in patients with immunodeficiency 200 mg every 6 hours. In case of pronounced immunodeficiency or impaired intestinal absorption, increase the dosage to 400 mg 5 times a day. Prophylactic drug treatment should be continued until there is a risk of infection.
For the treatment and prevention of infections that are caused by the herpes simplex virus, in immunodeficiency in children under 2 years old, Zovirax is prescribed in the same dosages as in adult patients. Children under 2 years old take the drug at a dose reduced by 2 times.
For chickenpox or herpes zoster, Zovirax is taken 800 mg 5 times a day. Duration of a course of therapy, as a rule, 7 days.
Children over 6 years old when treating chicken pox or shingles are prescribed a single dose of the drug 800 mg, at the age of 2-6 years - 400 mg, under 2 years old - 200 mg. Take Zovirax in the indicated dosage 4 times a day for 5 days.
In order to prevent infections caused by herpes viruses, after bone marrow transplantation, it is recommended to take a course of Zovirax in the form of injections, after which therapy is continued with the help of tablets. For these patients, the doctor determines the dosage and duration of treatment individually.
In patients who suffer from chronic renal failure, you need to adjust the dosage depending on the rate of creatinine clearance.
The solution for infusion is administered intravenously, while the minimum infusion time is 1 hour.
For the treatment of infections that are caused by the herpes simplex virus, in patients with a normal immune status, Zovirax dosage is calculated based on the 5 mg / kg standard. The resulting dose is administered every 8 hours.
In patients with immunodeficiency in the treatment of herpes zoster, varicella and herpes encephalitis, the dose is calculated according to a rate of 10 mg / kg of weight. The resulting dosage is administered intravenously every 8 hours.
After bone marrow transplantation in order to prevent cytomegalovirus infection, Zovirax is administered at 500 mg / m 2 every 8 hours. Typically, the introduction of the drug begin 5 days before surgery and continue for 30 days after it.
The dosages of the solution for infusion Zovirax for children are as follows:
- Patients with immunodeficiency for the treatment and prevention of infections caused by the herpes simplex virus - 500 mg / m 2 every 8 hours;
- Patients with normal immunity for the treatment and prevention of herpes infections - 250 mg / m 2 with an interval of 8 hours;
- Patients who have undergone bone marrow transplantation, in order to prevent cytomegalovirus infection, are prescribed adult doses of the drug;
- For the treatment of herpes infections, Zovirax is administered to the newborn in a dosage of 10 mg / kg of weight every 8 hours.
For dilution of Zovirax powder, a solution of sodium chloride 0.9% is used, while preparing a solution, 1 ml of which contains 25 mg of acyclovir. The resulting Zovirax solution is administered using a special infusion pump that regulates the rate of its introduction.
If it is impossible to administer the drug using an infusion pump, Zovirax solution is diluted in an infusion solution. The following solutions are used for its dilution: Hartman, glucose 5%, sodium chloride 0.9%.
The resulting solution should be used immediately after preparation.
Cream Zovirax is intended for local use. The cream is applied to the affected areas with a thin layer up to 5 times per day. The usual course of therapy is 4 days, but if necessary, it can be extended to 10 days.
Zovirax eye ointment is placed in the conjunctival sac up to 5 times a day. A single dose of ointment - a strip length of 10 mm. Apply the ointment until the disappearance of the symptoms of the disease and for another 3 days thereafter.
During the use of tablets and powder for the preparation of Zovirax infusions such side effects may occur:
- Nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, abnormal stool, increased liver enzymes, hyperbilirubinemia;
- Dizziness, headache, fatigue, hallucinations, confusion, disorientation of orientation in space, sleep and wakefulness;
- Anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia;
- Acute renal failure, an increase in the level of creatinine and urea in the blood;
- Urticaria, rash, pruritus, photosensitivity, sometimes - angioedema, shortness of breath, anaphylactoid reactions.
In case of ingestion of an infusion solution under the skin, severe local inflammatory reactions may develop, including necrosis.
When using Zovirax, local side effects were sometimes observed, such as itching, burning, irritation at the site of application, desquamation and dry skin, contact dermatitis. Rarely - angioedema.
When using Zovirax eye ointment, angioedema may develop. In addition, there are such side effects of the drug as a burning sensation, blepharitis, conjunctivitis. Occasionally, when treating with eye ointment, the appearance of punctate keratopathy was observed, which quickly passed without therapy.
When taking Zovirax in large doses, it is necessary that the patient receives enough liquid.
The use of this drug by a pregnant woman is recommended only if the possible benefit from its use exceeds the possible harm to the fetus.
During lactation, Zovirax therapy is carried out only after the cessation of breastfeeding.
During therapy, Zovirax ophthalmic ointment is not recommended to wear contact lenses.
