Lovage medicinal - a plant with carminative, expectorant and diuretic action.
In all parts of the lovage medicinal contains essential oil (0.1-2.7%), which consists of D-α-terpineol, cyneol, isovaleric, benzoic and acetic acid.
In addition to the essential oil, organic acids (malic, angelic), gums, sugars, starch, sesquiterpenes, carvacrol, furocoumarins (bergapten, psoralen), minerals and tannins are found in the roots.
The composition of the leaves is ascorbic acid.
Doctors of antiquity used lovage as a means of promoting the separation of bile and urine.
In folk medicine, decoctions and infusions of the roots of the lovage are used. They relieve intestinal colic, interferes with flatulence, improves appetite and digestion, have a carminative and diuretic effect. They are also used for urinary retention, edema, chronic pyelonephritis, diseases of the heart and respiratory organs (hoarseness, catarrh of the upper respiratory tract and bronchitis), gout, migraine, anemia, rheumatism, algomenorrhea, as a wound healing, antihelmintic and sedative.
Rhizomes and roots of plants have antibacterial activity. They are accepted in a number of European pharmacopoeias as carminative and anti-dyspeptic drugs, the plant is included in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia.
Lovage medicinal is a part of some homeopathic and combined herbal preparations (Canephron H).
External decoctions and infusions are used in the treatment of dermatitis, neurodermatitis, depriving, psoriasis, pruritus, acne vulgaris, eczema, wounds and ulcers.
Indications for use
- Bronchitis, hysteria, anemia, cystitis, headache (inside);
- Ulcers, lichen, neurodermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, pruritus (outwardly).
- Kidney disease;
- Acute pyelonephritis;
- Hypersensitivity to the active substances of the plant.
Homemade drugs from lovage
For the preparation of infusion of lovage medicinal 2 teaspoons of crushed roots need to pour 200 ml of boiling water, infuse for 1 hour and strain. As a carminative and diuretic agent, the infusion should be taken half an hour before meals 3 times a day for 1/3 cup.
As a sedative, as well as to improve well-being during hysterical seizures and nervous disorders, you should chew 3-5 grams of dried plant roots in the morning on an empty stomach.
In the treatment of gout and rheumatism, decoctions are used, for the preparation of which 5 g of crushed roots are poured 200 ml of water and cooked over low heat for 15 minutes. Broth insist in a warm place for 3 hours. Take half an hour before meals 3 times a day and 1 tablespoon.
When treating cough, dried lovage roots should be ground to a powder and taken before meals 3 times a day “at the tip of a knife.”
