Codelac is a combined drug with expectorant and central antitussive action.
Release form and composition
Codelac is available in the form of tablets (from yellow to brown with speckles from white to brown), 10 pcs. Each. in blisters, 1 or 2 packs in a carton box.
Active ingredients of the drug (in 1 tablet):
- Licorice root powder - 200 mg;
- Sodium bicarbonate - 200 mg;
- Grass powder thermopsis lanceolate - 20 mg;
- Codeine - 8 mg.
Additional components: microcrystalline cellulose, potato starch and talc.
Indications for use
Codelac is intended for the symptomatic treatment of dry cough of various etiologies for bronchopulmonary diseases.
- Bronchial asthma;
- Respiratory failure;
- Lactation period;
- Children's age up to 2 years;
- The need for central-acting analgesics (nalbuphine, buprenorphine, pentazocine);
- Drinking alcohol;
- Hypersensitivity to the drug.
Special observation during treatment is required for patients with increased intracranial pressure.
Dosing and Administration
Codelac should be taken orally.
The drug is prescribed 1 tablet 2-3 times a day.
Patients with impaired renal function are advised to increase the interval between doses, since they have a slow removal of codeine.
Treatment should not be long, the optimal duration is several days.
- Digestive system: nausea and / or vomiting, constipation;
- Central nervous system: drowsiness, headache;
- Allergic reactions: urticaria, pruritus.
With prolonged use, there is a chance of developing drug dependence (due to codeine).
When taking high doses of Codelac, it is possible: vomiting, drowsiness, arrhythmias, bradypnea, bradycardia, nystagmus, pruritus, atony of the bladder. In the case of an overdose, gastric lavage should be done, followed by the introduction of naloxone (an antagonist of codeine), analeptics and atropine, symptomatic therapy, including measures aimed at restoring the activity of the cardiovascular system and respiration.
Before prescribing Codelac, the cause of the cough should be clarified to confirm the need for special treatment.
The drug should not be taken simultaneously with expectorant and mucolytic agents.
It should be borne in mind that Codelac is doping because it contains codeine.
In connection with the likelihood of developing a sedative effect during the period of treatment, it is recommended to refrain from engaging in activities that require speed of mental and / or motor reactions and increased attention.
Adsorbents, coatings and binders can reduce the absorption of Codeine that is part of Codelac.
Chloramphenicol inhibits codein biotransformation, which enhances its action.
Codelac is not recommended to be taken simultaneously with other drugs that inhibit the activity of the central nervous system, since may increase the sedative and depressing respiratory center effect. These include antihistamines, sedatives, hypnotics, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and analgesics of central action.
Codeine in high doses may enhance the action of cardiac glycosides (including digoxin).
