Gevkamen is an irritant herbal medicine intended for external use.
Release form and composition
Available in the form of a characteristic smelling ointment of white or slightly yellowish color.
100 grams of ointment contains:
- 18 grams of levomenthol;
- 10 grams of synthetic racemic camphor;
- 10 grams of eucalyptus oil;
- Auxiliary components: clove oil (1 gram), solid paraffin oil (30.5 grams), petroleum jelly (to bring the amount of ointment to 100 grams).
Gevkamen comes to pharmacies in 25 and 40 grams of orange glass cans, as well as in aluminum tubes of 30 and 40 g.
Indications for use
According to the instructions to Gevkamen, the drug has a pronounced distracting and irritant, as well as a slight local anti-inflammatory action, which are due to the pharmacological properties of the active substances that make up the drug.
Thus, the use of Hevkamen is advisable when:
Application Gevkamena contraindicated in:
- Dermatological diseases;
- Violation of the integrity of the skin in the area to be treated with ointment;
- Hypersensitivity to the drug.
With regard to the use of the drug in pediatrics, Gevkamen ointment is not recommended for children under 12 years.
The use of the drug during pregnancy and during breastfeeding is possible according to indications, when the preliminary benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risks to the fetus / child.
Dosing and Administration
Following the guidelines specified in the instructions for Gevkamen, the drug should be applied to painful areas and easily rubbed into the skin with massage movements in the projection area of the inflamed organ or the exit of the nerve trunks under the skin. Massaging the painful place is necessary until a feeling of cooling or a slight burning sensation appears. Depending on the intensity of the pain syndrome, the procedure is repeated 2 to 4 times a day.
After application with ointment, hands should be washed thoroughly (if this area does not require treatment).
The dose of the drug for patients older than 12 years depends on the vastness of the painful area (or organ): to treat an area from 400 to 800 sq. Cm (corresponds to the area of the knee joint and sacrum), it is enough to take from 2 to 4 grams of ointment (this volume corresponds to the strip of ointment 2-4 cm long or volume of cherry and walnut).
The highest daily dose of Hevkamen is 8 grams (corresponds to a strip of ointment 8 cm long). The duration of one course of treatment is from 3 to 5 days. After a break of 2-3 days, it can be repeated.
If necessary, the use of Gevkamena more than 2 weeks, you should consult with your doctor.
When using Gevkamen ointment, in some cases, patients may experience local reactions, which are expressed mainly in the form of tingling, cold and burning sensations on the drug-treated areas of the skin. Also does not exclude the likelihood of allergic reactions.
Due to the low systemic absorption of drug components when applied topically, an overdose of Gevkamen is considered unlikely, but the risk increases with the accidental or deliberate use of the drug inside. It is important to note that the typical clinical picture does not develop. Oral Hevkamen possible:
- Lowering blood pressure;
- Increased muscle weakness;
- Confusion of consciousness;
- Increased seizure activity.
To assist (in case of ingestion of ointment), the patient should do a gastric lavage, give the adsorbent. Gevkamen has no specific antidote. Treatment of overdose is symptomatic, the purpose of which is to eliminate the violations that have occurred.
After applying Gevkamen, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Avoid contact with the mucous membranes and eyes. If this happens, rinse well with water and consult a doctor.
The drug does not affect the ability to engage in potentially hazardous to health and life activities or to manage motor vehicles.
Due to low systemic absorption, the likelihood of developing any significant drug interactions is low. However, it must be remembered that the drug contains terpenic derivatives menthol and camphor, which induce microsomal liver enzymes involved in the metabolization of other drugs.
Gevkamen is characterized by the ability to potentiate the action and increase the depth of penetration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs into soft tissues in the area of application (with topical application of NSAIDs).
With simultaneous application with dimethyl sulfoxide, Gevkamen increases the systemic absorption of the essential oils contained in it and increases the depth of penetration of the drug into the soft tissues in the area of application.

Terms and conditions of storage
Gevkamen - over-the-counter drug. Store the ointment in a dry, dark place at a temperature not exceeding 20 ºС. If these conditions are met, its shelf life is 36 months.
