Dulcolax - an agent used to stimulate intestinal motility.
Release form and composition
Dulcolax is produced in the form of smooth, oily torpedo-shaped suppositories, white with a yellowish tinge, with a depression in the base, in aluminum strips of 6 pcs.
One suppository contains 10 mg of bisacodil and an excipient - 1690 mg of Witepsol W45.
They also produce round beige-yellow biconvex smooth tablets Dulcolax, coated with an enteric coating, in blisters of 10 pieces.
The composition of one tablet includes 5 mg of Bisacodil and excipients:
- 34.9 mg of lactose;
- 8.3 mg of corn starch;
- 0.1 mg of magnesium stearate;
- 1.5 mg of soluble corn starch;
- 0.2 mg glycerol 85%.
The enteric coating of tablets contains 1.9354 mg of acacia gum, 23.3819 mg of sucrose, 0.3995 mg of titanium dioxide, 0.0015 mg of beeswax white, 0.006 mg of shellac, 0.0657 mg of yellow iron oxide dye, and also:
- 0.003 mg carnauba wax;
- 0.9762 mg castor oil;
- 0.9866 mg Eudragit L100;
- 0.0462 mg of macrogol 6000;
- 2.2147 mg Eudragit S100;
- 16.1608 mg of talc;
- 3.8225 mg of magnesium stearate.
Indications for use
Dulcolax is used for constipation caused by colonic hypotension, as well as for:
- Preparing the patient for X-ray and instrumental examinations;
- Intestinal cleansing during preoperative preparation.
The use of Dulcolax is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the active and auxiliary components that make up the product.
Tablets and suppositories are not prescribed to patients with intestinal obstruction, acute inflammatory and obstructive bowel diseases, as well as in the following cases:
- Acute diseases of the abdominal organs (appendicitis);
- Severe dehydration;
- Severe abdominal pain associated with nausea and vomiting;
- Hereditary intolerance to galactose or fructose.
With caution, Dulcolax is used during pregnancy, during the breastfeeding period, as well as in cases of renal and hepatic failure.
Suppositories are contraindicated in children under 10 years old, tablets - children under 4 years old.
Dosing and Administration
Tablets are taken orally, drinking plenty of water. To obtain a laxative effect in the morning, it is recommended to take the remedy the night before bedtime.
Dulcolax dosage for constipation for children over 10 years and adults is one or two tablets, for children 4-10 years - 5 mg (1 tablet).
In cases of preparing a patient for research or operations, the drug should be used only under medical supervision. Usually, 2 tablets of Dulcolax are prescribed at night 24 hours before the test.
The preparation in the form of suppositories is injected with a pointed end forward into the rectum. You can use both forms of the drug at the same time.
For constipation in children over 10 years old and adults, 1 suppository is prescribed per day. The action of Dulcolax in this case comes approximately in half an hour.
In the instructions to Dulkolaks indicated that the drug may cause side effects from the gastrointestinal tract, namely:
- The discomfort;
- Abdominal cramps;
Dulcolax can also cause hypersensitivity reactions on the part of the immune system, including anaphylaxis and angioedema.
Symptoms of drug overdose are impaired water and electrolyte balance, diarrhea, hyperaldosteronism, abdominal pain, convulsions, dehydration, exacerbation of urolithiasis, hypokalemia and a decrease in blood pressure.
In such cases, gastric lavage and the appointment of symptomatic treatment is required.
With chronic drug abuse, metabolic alkalosis, renal tubular damage and muscle weakness can develop.
Long-term or regular use of Dulcolax, as well as other laxatives, is not recommended unless the cause of constipation has been established. This is due to the fact that long-term therapy with high doses of the drug can lead to hypokalemia, electrolyte imbalance and dehydration.
Patients with diabetes should take into account that one tablet of the drug contains 0,006 XE in 33.2 mg of lactose.
Tablets should not be taken with products that lower the acidity in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract - with milk, proton pump inhibitors and antacids. These products contribute to the premature dissolution of the enteric film.
The use of Dulcolax in children is possible only on prescription.
It should be borne in mind that while taking high doses of the drug with diuretics or glucocorticosteroids at the same time increases the risk of hypokalemia (electrolyte imbalance).
The drug is synonymous with bisacodil. Dulcolax analogs include Mukofalk, Izafenin, Fayberleks, Slabikap, Antrasennin, Regulaks Picosulfate, Ex-Lax, Fibralax, Senade, Picoprep, Glaksenna, Phenolphthalein, Laxigal, Slabilen and Naturolax.
Terms and conditions of storage
In accordance with the instructions Dulcolax must be stored in a well-ventilated, protected from light, dry and out of reach of children, at a temperature not exceeding 25 ºС.
Pharmacies dispensed over-the-counter medicine. The shelf life of tablets, subject to the basic recommendations of the manufacturer, is three years, suppositories - five years.
