Bifikol - a drug used in the treatment of diseases of the digestive tract and metabolic disorders.
Release form and composition
Bifikol is produced in the form of a porous or crystalline beige lyophilisate with a specific odor in vials for 5 doses.
One dose of the product contains at least 1 billion live bifidobacteria, the same number of live E. coli and the following components of the protective drying environment (auxiliary substances):
- Skimmed milk - 10-25%;
- White lump sugar or sucrose - 5-10%;
- Food gelatin - from 1.5 to 3%.
Indications for use
Bifikol, according to the instructions, is intended for the treatment of chronic diseases of the digestive system, functional disorders of the intestine, dysbacteriosis and isolation of pathogenic bacteria.
Also, the drug is prescribed to patients staying at the stage of recovery after rotavirus or enterovirus infection, salmonellosis, dysentery, staphylococcal intestinal toxic infection and cholera.
The use of Bifikol is contraindicated in children younger than six months, in cases of intolerance to fructose and lactose, sucrose deficiency and isomaltase, as well as in ulcerative colitis and glucose-galactose malabsorption.
Dosing and Administration
The drug is taken orally for half an hour before meals. Before direct use Bifikol diluted with boiled water at room temperature in the following proportions - 1 tsp of water per dose, which is one fifth of the contents of the bottle.
It is recommended to use a container with a lid for diluting the lyophilisate, due to the fact that, according to the instructions, for a better dilution, it is required to shake the prepared solution.
Dosage means and duration of therapy in cases of follow-up treatment of convalescents after acute intestinal infections, depending on the age of the patient, is:
- For children from six months to one year - three doses of Bificol twice a day for 10-14 days;
- For patients aged from one to three years - five doses (one bottle) of the means once or twice a day for two weeks;
- For children older than three years and adults - five doses three times a day for 2-3 weeks.
The dosage of Bifikol and the duration of therapy in the treatment of non-specific and specific enterocolitis and colitis also depends on the age of the patient, namely:
- Children aged 6 to 12 months are prescribed three doses of the drug twice a day for 2 weeks;
- Patients aged 1 to 3 years - 5 doses twice a day for 2-3 weeks;
- Children older than three years and adults - five doses of Bifikola two or three times a day for three weeks.
The instructions to Bificol indicate that the drug may cause mild dyspeptic disorders - bloating, belching, discomfort and rumbling. Cases of overdose of the drug to date has not been registered.
The use of Bifikol is unacceptable in cases where the integrity of the packaging of the drug is broken.
If a burning sensation and pain in the abdomen, nausea, flatulence, vomiting, or unstable stool appear during therapy, it is recommended to temporarily stop taking the drug until the above symptoms disappear.
The simultaneous appointment of antibiotic therapy and chemotherapy is unacceptable, since the therapeutic effect of the use of the drug may be reduced.
