Avodart is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. It improves urination, reduces the size of the prostate gland, reduces the risk of acute urinary retention.
Release form and composition
Available in the form of soft oblong gelatin capsules. One capsule contains 500 μg of dutasteride. As auxiliary substances, the product contains butylhydroxytoluene and caprylic acid glycerides. Avodart is available in packs of 3 and 9 blisters, each containing 10 capsules.
Indications for use Avodarta
Avodart is prescribed for the prevention and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. The effect is achieved by reducing its size, improving urination. Thanks to the intake of this drug, the risk of acute urinary retention, which necessitates surgery, is reduced.
Also, the drug is used in combination therapy with alpha1-blockers. Most often, tamsulosin is selected as the alpha1-adrenergic blocker.
According to the instructions, Avodart should not be taken when:
- Hypersensitivity to dutasteride or other components of this drug;
- Hypersensitivity to other 5α-reductase inhibitors.
Women and children should not take the drug. With care, he is assigned to people with liver failure.
Administration and dosage Avodarta
Avodart should be taken orally, swallowing whole, without opening or chewing the capsule. Its contents may irritate the oral mucosa.
Adults and elderly men are prescribed 1 capsule 1 time per day. Despite the fact that the improvement occurs quickly, the course of treatment must continue for at least six months in order to be able to evaluate the therapeutic effect.
According to the instructions for Avodart, patients with impaired renal function can take 1 capsule per day, since less than 0.1 of this dose is excreted through the kidneys.
Currently there are no data on the use of this drug in patients with liver disease. Since dutasteride is extensively metabolized, caution should be exercised when treating these patients with Avodart.
Side effects of Avodarta
The following adverse events are listed depending on the frequency of occurrence and anatomical and physiological classification.
On the part of the immune system: very rarely - allergic reactions (localized edema, rash, itching, urticaria) and angioedema. Mental disorder: very rarely - depressive state. Reproductive system: very rarely - testicular swelling and testicular pain. Skin: rarely - alopecia (loss of body hair) and hypertrichosis.
Since dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin, children and women should avoid contact with capsules whose integrity is compromised. In contact with damaged capsules, wash your skin immediately with soap and water.
According to the results of four-year clinical studies, the incidence of heart failure when using Avodarta was higher in patients receiving combined treatment (combination of dutasteride and tamsulosin). A causal relationship between taking dutasteride and the development of heart failure has not been established.
For benign prostatic hyperplasia, a patient should be given a rectal exam before treatment with this drug. This eliminates the development of prostate cancer. During the course of admission it is necessary to repeat such studies.
